A continuous positive airway pressure or CPAP mask is used during therapy to enable you inhale pressurized air from a CPAP machine. The CPAP therapy is prescribed by a doctor when you are diagnosed as suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. This is a condition where the tissues at the back of your throat collapse when you are asleep. The tissues thus block your airway causing you to stop breathing.
CPAP therapy uses a machine to blow pressurized air down your throat to keep the tissues from collapsing. You can breathe in the pressurized air using a mask such as the Philips CPAP mask.
Are CPAP Masks Uncomfortable?
There are different types of CPAP masks and you can therefore identify one that will be comfortable for you. Getting the right CPAP mask is vital in ensuring that your CPAP therapy will be effective. Before you settle on a specific mask, you need to consider the sensitivity of your skin. Masks are cushioned using materials such as plastic, silicone, gel and some types of cloth. You should therefore select a mask that has a cushion which is not likely to affect your skin.
If you suffer from claustrophobia whereby you become anxious whenever you feel enclosed, then you will be better off with a small mask. For instance, the full face mask covers a larger part of your face which may make you feel anxious. However, the nasal mask and nasal pillow are smaller in size and may therefore give you the comfort that you need.
When To Use A Full Face Mask
A full face mask covers your mouth and nose and it is suitable if you have persistent nasal congestion or if you have a deviated septum. This is because the mask allows you to breathe through both your nose and mouth without affecting the therapy. You can also use the full face mask if your therapy requires you to use a high pressure which may be difficult to breathe in through the nose only.
If you suffer from nasal congestion yet you are claustrophobic, then the full face Philips CPAP mask known as Amara View would be ideal for you. The mask is fixed above your mouth and below the nose so that you do not have to feel enclosed.
When To Use A Nasal Mask Or Nasal Pillow
The nasal mask covers your nose and it has a triangular shape. You can use the mask if you normally breathe through your nose without a problem. It is suitable if you are a side sleeper or if you toss a lot in your sleep. If you prefer to read a book or watch television before sleeping, then the nasal Philips CPAP mask would be ideal for you. The mask does not obstruct your vision and creates a good seal in order to avoid air leakage.
The nasal pillow on the other hand consists of two soft pillows or cushions which are inserted at the edge of the nostrils. This mask creates a very good seal and it is suitable if you are a side sleeper or if you normally sleep on your stomach. The nasal mask and the nasal pillow are a good option if you are claustrophobic.
